Doris's Famous Celebrating Rejection Lemon Cake
Rejection Can Be Delicious
“She pulled out a large tablecloth and tucked it firmly into the top of my blouse…It was lime-green and decorated with hideous orange and brown flowers. In one hand, I held high the teacup, and in the other I balanced the huge slab of (lemon) cake. I looked like a psychedelic Lady Justice, except right then I actually envied the fact she was blind.” - The Rejected Writers' Book Club
Doris's Crying into the Chocolate Acceptance Cake
Accepting the things I cannot change with Chocolate
“I swallowed another rather large lump of (chocolate) cake. “who is (the letter) from? I asked meekly, not taking my eyes from it. I was too frightened to pick it up in case it self-destructed…(Doris grunted) Well, why don't you read it? “Now I have to go and buy myself a hat!”… “Yes a hat and a funky scarf and snazzy glasses. All good authors wear snazzy glasses. Well I won’t do it. I look ridiculous in a hat!” - The Rejected Writers' Book Club

Doris's Caught in a Landslide Chocolate Brownies
Doris's Competition Rules
• ONLY use original recipes. We don't want Martha Stewart or Paula Dean chasing us down with a stick.
• Feel free to send us a photo so we can all ogle at your creation and check out how clean your kitchen is.
• No animals or husbands should be injured in the process. Please test recipes on yourself or your in-laws.
• Send recipes that are ideally suitable for book clubs everywhere; stuff that can be balanced in one hand so a book can be balanced in the other, so nothing that needs chopsticks or to be set on fire. Remember, books are flammable!
• Be willing to let go offa’ it and have your recipe and your name published in the cookbook to sell to the millions upon millions of people who will want it. So, if Nana will keel over because it’s a family secret recipe or you are in the witness protection program you may want to think twice before entering.
• Lastly, have fun with your recipes, enjoy baking! No shouting, punching or swearing.
Remember, this is cooking, not politics!
NOTE FROM DORIS:
Hello there! I am the head honcho over at The Rejected Writers’ Book Club that is now, oh, so famous! At least between my house and Main Street, that is. I am writing to you all out there on the World Wide Web to let you know you could be FAMOUS, too, and be in our next book!
I have only one criteria for the recipes, add as MANY calories as you can. FIGHT the need to make anything gluten-fat-soy-peanut-dairy-wheat or flavor-free. I ain’t that kind of woman and this isn't that KIND of cookbook.
This is a book for celebrations, to make us happy so we can throw off all guilt at letting that one wheat kernel from the devil past our lips. So send me your CALORIE- LADEN worst. Feel free to GO MAD, dance around the kitchen as you add the cream instead of the low-fat milk, chuck in gallons of oil without even the whiff of a coconut or a flaxseed in it.
Throw in LBS of sugar that is shamefully white and wouldn't even hear of being substituted for a date or stevia. And give me your flour that has never even seen an almond stripped bare-faced right from its modified husk. Yes, you can watch your health the rest of the year but NOT in this cookbook.
So, sent me your FAT-LADENED worst, because a little of what you fancy is always good for you!
Communications & Business Consultant
"Suzanne Kelman is a first-rate screenplay instructor who not only teaches the rudiments of professional screenplay development, she delivers it with aplomb! She's a force of nature who's teaching employs a variety of learning tools for many learning styles — printed materials and take-home sheets, visual images to illustrate the learning, group discussion and lively, supportive critique. I'm taking her class a second time and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants that nudge to get started, or support to just keep going to the finish."
Artistic Director, Writer.
Suzanne Kelman is a force of nature as a writer. Whether it be novels or her award winning screenplays, she has a special gift for bringing characters to vivid, evocative life. She creates a world with her words and draws the reader in with both her fall-out-of-your-chair-laughing comedy or keep you on the edge of your seat with dramatic tension so taut, that it feels as if it will snap if you look away.
Director, Actor, Writer
Working with Suzanne Kelman is pure joy. I've had the distinct pleasure of being in the room with her as an actor and co-writer on past projects. I highly regard her ability to create a dynamic, creative and thoroughly enjoyable work environment. As a director, she is clear and consistent with a sharp eye for comedy - I trust her instincts completely. As a writer, she gives ample space for the creative process to flow while possessing editorial skills to distill a story to its essence. Whenever an opportunity to work with Ms. Kelman presents itself, I jump at the chance!
